Largemouth Bass
BassShallow backwater bays, emergent vegetation sloughs, calm flats
Pre-spawn staging and bedding. Fish slow around emerging weeds. Males are aggressive on beds, females stage just outside.
Deep weedlines, shade under docks, high-oxygen spillways
Punch thick vegetation midday. Frogs over heavy mats early/late. Look for shade and current breaks where water is cooler.
Shallow grass flats, points leading to deep water, wood cover
Feeding frenzy. Bass are actively chasing schools of baitfish. Cover water quickly with moving reaction baits.
Deep wood cover, main lake points, steep channel drop-offs
Lethargic fish. Retrieve with long pauses. Target warmest parts of the afternoon when sun hits structure.

Smallmouth Bass
SmallmouthSteep rocky ledges, riprap banks, current breaks near flats
Staging near spawning banks. Focus on warming rocky transitions. Jerkbaits paused for 5-8 seconds trigger big pre-spawn strikes.
Main river wing dams in current, deep rocky ledges, seams
Position boat up-current of wing dam, Spot-Lock, and cast jigs down the face. They sit in the eddy waiting for food.
Wing dams with moderate current, deep rock transitions
Feeding heavily before winter dormancy. Focus on structural points near main current. Use reaction baits with flash.
Deep channel holes, slack current basins, deep rock piles
Tightly schooled in deep wintering basins with slow flow. Highly lethargic, slow metabolism.

Walleye
WalleyeCurrent seams near spawning creeks, wing dam tips, riprap
Spawning runs. Focus on hard rock bottoms in moving water. Drag jigs slowly over the rocks. Peak bite at dawn/dusk.
Deep wing dams in main channel, channel edges, deeper holes
Troll deep crankbaits along channel edges using Autopilot, or Spot-Lock and drag live bait rigs along deep structure.
Ledges and drop-offs, tributary mouths with schooling shad
Follow baitfish schools. Overcast days are best. Drag live bait rigs or troll deep cranks slowly over channel edges.
Deepest holes in main channel, slack river basins
Lethargic, suspended near bottom. Short feeding windows at dusk. Very subtle presentations.

Crappie
CrappieShallow brush piles, standing timber in back bays, docks
Spawning in waves around full moons. Extremely aggressive protection of beds. Look for shallow wood near deeper exits.
Deep weedlines, deep brush piles, shaded marina docks
Summer schoolers. Move to deeper cover or heavy shade. Spot-Lock over deep brush, drop jigs down, and shake rod tip.
Deep brush piles, standing timber near channel edges
Schooling tightly as water cools. Once you catch one, keep the bobber stop set at that exact depth. Work brush slowly.
Deep brush, river channel basins with zero current
Tightly grouped and suspended. Move bobber up or down 6" at a time until you mark the school. Very light bites.

Panfish / Bluegill
PanfishShallow bays, emerging weeds, secondary points adjacent to flats
Transitioning to shallow spawning bays. Aggressive feeding. Focus on warmest shallow pockets near cover.
Boat docks, weedlines, overhanging shoreline trees
Pound docks and overhanging branches. Bluegills wait for insects to fall. Great all-day fun for kids.
Weed edges, secondary points, shaded deeper wood
Moving toward deeper structures as weeds die off. Work small jigs slowly along remaining green weed edges.
Protected backwater basins, deep side of points
Schooled near bottom in deep, current-free backwaters. Subtle, vertical jigging is key.

Channel Catfish
CatfishRiprap banks, tributary inlets (warm water), flooded brush
Catfish follow warm water. Inlets after rain carry food and warm water, attracting hungry pre-spawn cats.
Shallow mud flats at night, deep river holes during the day
Scent-driven summer feeding. Daytime they hide in deep holes; at night they cruise shallow flats to feed. Anchor and wait.
River channel drop-offs, deep log jams, slow eddies
Slow down presentations. Fish stay close to structure as water temps cool. Cast near deep timber and wait.
Deepest slow-current holes, main river basins
Highly lethargic. Scent is less effective in cold water. Must drop bait directly in wintering holes.

Northern Pike
PikeShallow marshy sloughs, incoming warm water backwater pockets
Ice-out spawners. Focus on shallow marshy sloughs warming first. Retrieve spoons or spinners slowly near mud bottoms to trigger hungry post-spawners.
Deep vegetation edges, backwater slough mouths with current
Focus on deep grass lines adjacent to cooler, moving channel current. Early/late throw frogs over heavy moss; midday retrieve deep squarebills or spinners aggressively.
Weedy points, transition lines bordering deep main drops
Aggressive pre-winter feeding on migrating baitfish schools. Cover water fast with vibrating bladed jigs or lipless rattling baits.
Protected backwater basins, slow bays adjacent to channels
Suspended near deep slough exits and drop-offs. Set heavy tip-ups with large live bait positioned 1-2 ft off clay bottom. Pike move slow but strike big meals.
